AERIAL Definition

AERIAL: Any structure or device used to collect or radiate electromagnetic waves.

The British use the term AERIAL.

We in the United States traditionally use the term ANTENNA.

In various parts of the world one term or the other is used and in many parts of the world the terms are used together to denote an Antenna that is mounted high above ground, thus an Aerial Antenna.

Obviously an Aerial or Antenna or Aerial Antenna is a means of transmitting information in which the transmission medium consists of electromagnetic radiation. Information is transmitted by means of the modulation of a carrier wave in a transmitter; the modulated carrier wave is fed to a transmitting aerial from which it is broadcast through the atmosphere or through space. A receiving aerial forms part of a resonant circuit, which can be tuned to the frequency of the carrier wave, enabling the receiver that it feeds selectively to amplify and then to demodulate the transmitted signal.
